To further this aim, it is necessary that courses of study, teaching methods, and particularly subject matter reflect the predominating spirit of the current era. No specifically authoritative list of social science aims, however, exists to guide either the writing or the selection of textbooks, and questions frequently arise as to what should be regarded as vital concepts for the potential citizen to make his own, and as to the degree to which textbooks provide these concepts.
